It’s not every day that a little Beaverton based animal rescue organization like ours gets to boast adding a celebrity to their board, but that’s what’s happened and we’re very excited about it! Comedian and writer, Elayne Boosler has joined the Indigo Rescue/OCU at Indigo Ranch Board of Directors. You can read about Elayne and some of her phenomenal career on our Indigo Rescue website (www.indigorescue.org). Here’s a short history of how Elayne joined Indigo Rescue’s board:

Elayne Boosler founded her own non-profit animal welfare organization, Tails of Joy, in 2001 (www.tailsofjoy.net), to help support deserving rescues across the country.

“One of the fund-raising programs of Tails Of Joy was to sell all after-show merchandise from my comedy shows for the benefit of a local rescue in that city.” explains Boosler. “The very first rescue to benefit from that program was Indigo Rescue. Leading up to the Portland show I asked the locals what the most effective rescue was, and who should receive the money. Indigo Rescue was mentioned over and over again. I’ve stayed in touch with the group all these years, interested in their further programs and developments. Indigo Rescue is at a very exciting crossroads of becoming self sufficient enough to carry on its work by creating its own profits through OCU at Indigo Ranch. I’d very much like to help them do that.”

So, Elayne is one of us now! You can read more about Elayne in her bio on our Indigo Rescue website (www.indigorescue.org) under Meet the Indigo Rescue Board. Also, check out some of the information in our new brochure for OCU at Indigo Ranch and you’ll see some of Elayne’s fun contributions. We REALLY need more humor in animal rescue! We’re currently working on plans to have Elayne come up to do a benefit concert for us in Spring, 2009. Imagine the possibilities!

As the director of a small, grass roots animal rescue organization with very big dreams and ambitions, I’d like to tell the story of a small miracle that happened when a big company with employees who have a lot of heart decided to get involved. More than two years ago, Intel employee Meghan Gross, took it upon herself to coordinate and encourage volunteers to come out to our bi-weekly adoption outreach events at Petsmart. Her goal was to have Intel employees assist us in placing more rescued animals in new adoptive homes. But there have been others, too. For more than a few years, Ben Metzler has been coming to our rescue with assistance on various computer programs, tech support, and ideas to help strengthen our organization, electronically. A couple of months ago, Umesh Jalan, who had also volunteered at a fund raising activity, invited me to come to Intel as a guest and give a presentation to his group, showing what our organization does for animals in the community, and encouraging more volunteer participation.

Matt Carty suggested our organization for his MBA team project and they helped us tremendously with our marketing and business plans. He also proposed featuring a rescued pet in the monthly Intel publication.

A few months ago, Aubrey Clark, who has volunteered for us for several years at many of our activities (and, incidentally, adopted two cats from us over ten years ago, and her dog from us about five years ago,) helped promote the involvement of even more Intel volunteer teams, who started scheduling dates to come out and work on various projects at our ranch in Vernonia.

On September 24th, 2008, two buses and many, many cars pulled up on our property with loads of Intel employees who wanted to help us with a whole list of projects. Joy West and Steve Jones came out a few weeks prior and we walked through and determined which projects would be feasible in good weather, and we even selected a few projects in case it was bad weather. Joy coordinated volunteers and made lists of tools and gear the volunteers would need and Steve used his own building and farm experience to supervise the individual teams while they worked. It was a virtual sea of blue shirts while all these Intel people went to work on our projects…WOW!

Over the past few months, the generosity of Intel volunteers have helped us build a structure to protect our chickens from the hawks. They’ve repaired fences destroyed by the flood and needed to keep the animals safe. They’ve painted and cleaned our hen house, and picked about a million apples from the trees and off the ground. They’ve dug trenches, and shoveled and moved lots of dirt. They’ve dug holes and planted lots of new plants in the garden, and weeded between the Giant Sequoia’s along the river on our property and in our blueberry garden. A few people even started painting the interior of the house!

For all of your generosity and incredible support, we at Indigo Rescue want to say, from the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU Intel! Your help makes our work so much easier. We hope that you will come up to visit us again…and you are always welcome!

What a beautiful day! We heard several riders comment on what a great ride it was coming out to our ranch…(and we agree!)

Riders started at the Bethany Family Pet Clinic and ended their Poker Run at OCU at Indigo Ranch where they finished off a day in the country with a picnic, tye-dye, great silver jewelry for sale, a raffle and lots of fun! A resounding thank you to SPOT Magazine and all the riders, who raised $750 for Indigo Rescue from their first annual event. Hope to see you all again next year!
